Blue Monday 2025 is here, but that doesn’t mean you have to be down-hearted about your business prospects. We have five ways in which you can use this annual awareness day to set your business up for a healthy and prosperous 2025. Traditionally Blue Monday has been seen as a time to be depressed – as the joviality of the festive season comes to an end, the weather is cold and dull and the bills start piling up. However, this year turn your attention away from what is wrong about this time of year and how you can help your business improve.
Take time to reflect on the last year
It’s important to learn from what went right for the business in 2024 and areas in which you could have done better. Put in place business goals for 2025 and how you aim to achieve them.
Refresh the business
The new year is a time for new beginnings and new looks. This can be the same for businesses. It might be time to refresh your brand image. This could be a completely new look, branding or logo; moving in a new direction; or creating a new campaign to attract customers.
Organise your finances
Many businesses around Blue Monday focus on the negative aspects of their finances. However, it should ideally be a time to see where you can make positive changes. This could be changing your payment terms to ensure bills are paid promptly; establishing a process for dealing with late payments; or employing a third-party debt recovery company to manage your unpaid invoices. All of these areas will help you to improve your business cash flow and ensure you have a more prosperous year.
Sort out your debts
There’s no point in focussing on getting your customer invoices paid quicker if your business also has extensive debts. Where you have a large number of debts outstanding it’s important to have a plan for repayment. Write down all your debts, including balances, and concentrate on paying any priority ones first. This could include rent arrears, business rates and utility bills. Then look at paying any invoices where further action, such as a County Court Judgement, has been mentioned. Having a CCJ against your business could impact negatively on your credit rating and put you into difficulties at a later date.
Ask for help this Blue Monday
As a business you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help when it’s needed. There is a vast amount of support for businesses of all sizes. For example, are you claiming all the available grants and business relief packages available to you? Your local authority or business networking organisation can help you navigate the system and ensure you are getting all the appropriate financial support. It’s good to talk with like-minded people and businesses. Networking meetings, whether virtual or in-person, can be an excellent space to talk with other people in the same situation as you. At the same time, you are also helping your business by selling your services to potential customers.
